What gets converted
Headings and styles
Word Heading 1–6 styles become # headings; bold, italic and strikethrough are preserved.
Lists and tables
Bulleted and numbered lists and Word tables are turned into Markdown lists and GFM tables.
Links
Hyperlinks are converted to Markdown links so references stay clickable.
Optional images
Images can be embedded as base64 data, or skipped to keep the Markdown small and readable.
Word to Markdown FAQ
Is my Word file uploaded to a server?
No. The .docx file is read and converted entirely inside your browser, so it never leaves your device.
Does it support the old .doc format?
No. Only .docx files are supported. Open a .doc file in Word and use Save As → .docx first.
Why do my headings not convert?
Headings are detected from Word’s built-in Heading styles. If text is only made large and bold manually, it is converted as normal text.
What about complex layouts?
Text boxes, columns, headers/footers and tracked changes have no Markdown equivalent and may be simplified or dropped. Check the conversion notes shown under the result.
